Augustine Eguavoen has firmly refuted rumors suggesting he has resigned from his position as caretaker coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Returning to Nigeria from Rwanda, Eguavoen addressed the speculation, stating clearly, “the reports circulating are not accurate; I am still in charge.”
Eguavoen, who also serves as the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation clarified his role, saying, “my duty is to manage the Super Eagles at this time. I will continue in this capacity.” He further explained, “I only mentioned that I would meet with the federation’s leadership after these two games to discuss our strategy for upcoming matches.”
The caretaker coach expressed frustration with the spread of false information, noting, “it’s disappointing to see incorrect stories being circulated. In our current situation, we need to focus on positive outcomes.”
Under Eguavoen’s leadership, the Super Eagles achieved a 3-0 win over Benin and played to a 0-0 draw against Rwanda in Kigali on Tuesday.

Reports had suggested that Eguavoen might be stepping down due to the initial terms of his engagement, which were said to be limited to just two matches.
“I have been given a mandate to handle two games. I will want to say I am very pleased with the boys and again thanks to the NFF leadership and all the boys supported me in terms of discipline and working hard,” he was quoted saying.
He continued: “It ends today, which is the two games mandate. I can’t talk about Libya because I haven’t been told but however I can talk about it a little bit in case we have another coach, we can talk about it. I want to be closer to the team as it should be and I can give inside story and inside information that we need to be able to overcome Libya.
“No team is a pushover anymore but with this spirit that these boys have exhibited and from what I have seen, we have a very bright future.”
The team currently tops Group D in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification series, having earned four points from their first two matches.
