Shizzer Joy Nasara Bada, a former Commissioner of Finance and Accountant General under Nasir El-Rufai’s administration in Kaduna State, has been arrested by operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

Bada was reportedly apprehended while attempting to leave the country amid rising concerns over a potential escape in light of corruption allegations against both her and former governor El-Rufai. ICPC officials, who had been tracking Bada’s movements, acted on intelligence suggesting that she might flee to avoid investigation.

The arrest forms part of a larger crackdown on key officials from El-Rufai’s administration, with multiple figures now under scrutiny for alleged financial mismanagement during their time in office. Although the specifics of the allegations against Bada have yet to be made public, insiders believe they are related to large-scale financial irregularities, including public fund mismanagement and embezzlement.

This comes as El-Rufai faces mounting legal battles, including a fundamental rights lawsuit he filed after being accused by the Kaduna State House of Assembly of siphoning N423 billion from the state treasury during his eight-year tenure. Political analysts suggest that Bada’s arrest may signal the beginning of a more extensive investigation into El-Rufai’s administration.

The ICPC is expected to release further details as the investigation progresses, with speculation growing that several top officials could soon face similar charges.

The ICPC is a Nigerian agency that was inaugurated on 29 September 2000 following the recommendation of President Olusegun Obasanjo. The mandate is to receive and investigate reports of corruption and in appropriate cases prosecute the offender(s), to examine, review and enforce the correction of corruption prone systems and procedures of public bodies, with a view to eliminating corruption in public life, and to educate and enlighten the public on and against corruption and related offences with a view to enlisting and fostering public support for the fight against corruption. The Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Act 2000 governs the committee’s activities.
