Over 1,000 passengers were reportedly left stranded when a Warri-Itakpe train abruptly broke down at Agenebode station, causing significant delays and leaving travelers frustrated.

The incident occurred around noon, halting the journey of the train traveling between Warri in Delta State and Itakpe in Kogi State.

Passengers, including children, elderly citizens, and business travelers, were reportedly stuck at the remote Agenebode station for hours without clear communication from the train operators.

Eyewitnesses reported that the train suffered a technical failure that could not be immediately repaired, leaving passengers anxious as they awaited updates.

However initial reports indicated the issue is related to the train’s hydraulic system, which affected its ability to pump air, causing the unexpected breakdown.

Some passengers expressed concern over the lack of adequate provisions, such as water and food, especially as many of them were not prepared for the extended wait.

One stranded passenger, who preferred not to be named shared her frustration: “We were on our way to Abuja when the train just stopped at Agenebode. There’s no clear information from the authorities on when we can continue. People are tired, and it’s really frustrating.”

In the absence of official communication, some passengers reportedly attempted to arrange alternative transport, but the remote location of the station made it difficult to organize quick solutions. Others remained in the train, hoping for a swift resolution to the issue.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has not yet released an official statement on the cause of the breakdown or the steps being taken to address the situation.

This breakdown comes amid increasing concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s rail infrastructure, particularly on the Warri-Itakpe route, which has been a vital link for commuters in the region. This particular railway line has seen its share of challenges in recent years, including operational delays and mechanical failures.

Passengers are calling for improved maintenance of trains and better communication from railway authorities to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

As of press time, it remains unclear how long the stranded passengers will have to wait for their journey to resume.
