The Edo State House of Assembly has lifted the suspension of lawmakers, Donald Okogbe and Adeh Isibor after five months.
Both lawmakers, Okogbe (PDP-Akoko-Edo II) and Isibor (APC-Esan North-East I), had been suspended on May 6, alongside Bright Iyamu (Orhionmwon South), for allegedly conspiring to impeach the Speaker and other principal officers.
During Wednesday’s plenary in Benin, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku announced the assembly’s decision to reinstate the two legislators. The recall marks the end of a prolonged suspension period, allowing the lawmakers to return to their legislative duties.
Agbebaku took the opportunity to congratulate the governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, on his recent victory in the governorship election, urging him to serve all Edo citizens and not be swayed by sycophants.
As the assembly resumed from a long recess, the Speaker commended the members for their commitment to passing important bills and resolutions. Additionally, the House approved a 57-day sitting calendar for the second quarter of its second session.

Recall that the Edo State House of Assembly had suspended the three lawmakers over allegations of attempting to destabilize the House’s leadership. During a tense session on May 6, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku claimed that the suspended lawmakers were being influenced by external forces to incite unrest within the Assembly.
Agbebaku further alleged that, in a bizarre twist, individuals brought native doctors into the Assembly complex at midnight on May 1, 2024, performing incantations and leaving charms on the premises as part of their efforts to remove the House leadership.
In a heated exchange, the suspended lawmakers vehemently opposed the suspension, arguing that the Speaker lacked the authority to act unilaterally without a formal vote. “Mr. Speaker, you do not have the right to unilaterally suspend any member of the House. You must call for votes. Allow members to vote on the matter,” they shouted during the session.
Despite their protests, the suspension was upheld, marking a new chapter in the Assembly’s internal conflict, with tensions running high as both sides assert their positions.
This recall is seen as a step toward restoring harmony within the assembly after months of political tension.
