Martin Kaufmann, the Vice President of Products at Thuraya Satellite Communications, reported the loss of his luggage containing personal belongings at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Tuesday.
The incident was highlighted during a partnership announcement between Thuraya and TSAT Communications Company in the capital on Wednesday.
Thuraya, recognized as the sixth-largest satellite operator globally, provides advanced communication technologies across more than 150 countries, catering to critical needs on land, at sea, and in the air.
At the event, Kaufmann was unexpectedly seen in a casual black jacket and grey trousers instead of his usual suit and tie. In an interview with PUNCH Online, he confirmed the loss but mentioned that airport authorities had reassured him that his luggage would be located and returned promptly. “Yes, this happened yesterday when I arrived in the country. But I’ve been informed not to worry, as it should be found and returned to me today,” he stated.

Following the announcement of his missing luggage, several dignitaries approached Kaufmann to express their sympathy. The event’s compere, Dorkong Rimdan, even playfully offered him some of her own clothes if his luggage wasn’t recovered.
“In case your luggage isn’t found, Mr. Kaufmann, I have a few dresses I could lend you. But we do hope you find it,” she joked.
Efforts by PUNCH Online, to gather comments from officials at the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development regarding the incident were unsuccessful. The officials directed inquiries to the Special Assistant on Media and Communications for the Minister, Tunde Moshood.
When reached for comment, Moshood seemed surprised by the news, and asked: “Did you say this happened here in Abuja? I wasn’t aware of it, but I will look into it. Let me talk to the relevant parties first.”
