Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, has firmly denied allegations of her involvement in securing a $57.5 billion loan for the Biafra Republic Government in Exile.

The claim, made by separatist leader Simon Ekpa on October 23, 2024, stated that the World Bank and International Monetary Fund had agreed to provide the loan, crediting Okonjo-Iweala with facilitating the deal to support a planned declaration of Biafra independence on December 2, 2024.

He wrote: “The World Bank and IMF have agreed to loan the sum of $57.5 billion to Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) to form our government after December 2nd 2024 declaration of Biafra. I thank our sister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for helping me to facilitate the loan.”

In response, Okonjo-Iweala condemned the allegations, labeling them “outrageous” and false. She issued a statement via X, clarifying: “I know no sensible person will believe what is contained in the outrageous tweet below, but in these troubled times, it is important to underscore that the statement is false.” She urged those exploiting her name for such purposes to stop immediately, emphasizing, “Again, I enjoin all those seeking to misuse my name to desist.”

Her denial is particularly significant given the sensitive nature of the Biafra issue in Nigeria, which has historical roots dating back to the civil war in the late 1960s. The topic remains a contentious one, with various factions advocating for different political and economic outcomes. By distancing herself from these claims, Okonjo-Iweala aims to clarify her position and reinforce her commitment to ethical standards in public discourse.

Moreover, this incident highlights the broader challenge of combating misinformation in today’s digital age. The rapid spread of false information can have serious implications for public figures and institutions alike.

As a prominent figure in international trade and economics, Okonjo-Iweala’s reputation is critical not only for her personal career but also for the credibility of the WTO itself. Her commitment to transparency and truthfulness is essential as she navigates these turbulent waters of public perception and media scrutiny.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s refutation of involvement in facilitating loans for Biafra underscores her dedication to maintaining integrity in her professional life while also addressing the pervasive issue of misinformation that can distort public understanding and dialogue.
