On Friday, Maj.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede officially assumed command as the Acting Chief of Army Staff, COAS, marking the first time in Nigerian Army history that such an appointment has been made.

The historic occasion comes after President Bola Tinubu announced Oluyede’s new role on Wednesday, designating him as Acting COAS while the current Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, remains on medical leave abroad.

Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja, who has been receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital for the past month, is reportedly on the path to recovery.

During the handover event, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, emphasized the significance of the appointment, noting its unprecedented nature. “This is the first time in the history of our Armed Forces that we have had an Acting Chief of Army Staff due to extraordinary circumstances,” Musa said. He expressed hope for Lagbaja’s full recovery and return, while underscoring the importance of continuity and strong leadership during this critical time for Nigeria.

Musa added that Oluyede’s appointment was made in accordance with the Armed Forces Act, ensuring the army maintains effective command and operational focus.

In his remarks, Maj.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for entrusting him with this significant responsibility. He pledged to uphold the directives of the President and continue with the strategic vision set by Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja.

“This appointment is necessary to give Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja ample time to fully recover,” Oluyede stated. “I promise to carry out my duties with unwavering commitment and to ensure our mission to tackle insecurity and foster peace across the nation continues seamlessly.”

He called for the support and prayers of the nation, emphasizing the need for unity in overcoming security challenges and restoring prosperity to Nigeria.
