Dr. Emeka Christian, Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, MDCAN, Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Ebute Meta Chapter, has urged doctors to prioritize their own health and mental well-being to ensure effective patient care.

Speaking at the MDCAN 2024 Annual Scientific Conference and General Meeting, themed “Physicians Heal Thyself,” Christian emphasized that the demanding nature of the medical profession often leads doctors to neglect their personal health, a situation exacerbated by the current shortage of medical professionals.

Christian noted: “Doctors are dying due to stress, and with the ongoing shortage of professionals, this issue has only become more critical. It is essential that doctors ensure they are healthy first to better care for others.”

Dr. Ademola Dada, the hospital’s Medical Director, encouraged physicians to prioritize well-being beyond medical practice, quoting the World Health Organization’s definition of health as a state of complete physical, social, and mental well-being. He highlighted the importance of social engagement as part of holistic health.

Consultant Histopathologist, Dr. Olubukola Aseru who delivered a lecture on the conference theme, added that physicians often overlook their health needs, resulting in preventable illnesses. “Doctors must seek care from other professionals when necessary and avoid self-treatment to maintain optimal health,” Aseru advised.

The MDCAN FMC chapter honored Dr. Ademola Dada with an award for his contributions to healthcare advancements at FMC Ebute Meta.
