Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission , INEC, have began the process of distributing electoral materials to various polling units in the Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The distribution took place at the Registration Area Centre located at the Anglican Primary School, a key hub for ensuring the smooth flow of the election process.

Polling Unit Officers, as well as members of the National Youth Service Corps , were on-site to receive their designated materials and prepare for the day’s activities. Security was also a priority, with policemen stationed at the venue to accompany the materials and officials to their respective destinations, ensuring the integrity and safety of the election process.

As the materials were being distributed, some early risers among the local residents took the opportunity to check their names on the voter’s list, eagerly awaiting the start of the election. In the meantime, enterprising locals took advantage of the situation by setting up small stalls selling rice, water, and drinks to those who had arrived early, providing refreshments as they waited for the proceedings to begin.

Speaking exclusively to PUNCH Online, an official from the Independent National Electoral Commission highlighted the critical importance of distributing electoral materials promptly to ensure the smooth and timely commencement of the election process. The INEC official underscored that delays in the distribution of materials could potentially derail the entire election, causing disruptions that might lead to confusion, logistical challenges, and, in the worst case, a postponement of the election. Such delays, the official noted, could result in voter disenfranchisement and undermine the integrity of the electoral process.

The official was clear in emphasizing that the goal of starting the election on time is paramount. With the eyes of the nation on the process, any hold-up at the start would cast a shadow over the entire day’s proceedings and could lead to a loss of public trust in the system. In light of this, the official confirmed that the distribution of election materials had started promptly and according to the pre-set schedule. “We started the distribution of materials on time, and our polling unit officers left early to ensure everything is in place at the polling stations,” the official stated. “The aim is to make sure the election kicks off as planned, without any unnecessary delays.”

The INEC official further stressed that the success of the election hinges not just on the distribution of materials, but on ensuring that every aspect of the election, from the arrival of the materials to the actual voting process, unfolds smoothly and according to plan. “Hopefully, the election will start as scheduled,” the official continued. “There is absolutely no room for delay. We are fully committed to making sure everything runs on time so that voters can cast their ballots without hindrance and that the process is as transparent and orderly as possible.”
