Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo has employed 360 cleaners from the state’s three senatorial districts into the civil service.
Dr. Anthony Okungbowa, the State Head of Service, HOS, disclosed this on Friday in Benin while addressing the press on the initiatives taken by the Okpebholo-led administration aimed at benefiting the people.
Okungbowa mentioned that the newly recruited individuals have been assigned to various government ministries and parastatals to strengthen the workforce.
He pointed out that the previous administration had a contract with consultants and contractors who had the authority to hire and dismiss workers at their discretion.

The HOS further clarified that these employees would receive the N70,000 minimum wage, which is paid to all state employees in Edo, emphasizing that the Okpebholo administration is dedicated to good governance across all sectors.
“Recently, the governor directed that cleaners should be employed into the state civil service as against using consultants and contractors.
“These consultants and contractors were in business and contract with the government.
“They were paid to employ cleaners to clean government offices, and their take-home pay then was not encouraging and couldn’t take them home.
“Gov. Okpebholo was not pleased with the arrangement of the Obaseki administration, and as such instructed that a direct employment should be embarked on to ensure cleaners are recruited and get paid the N70,000 minimum wage,” he said.
He continued by stating that prior to their employment, cleaners in the state were earning between N20,000 and N30,000 because they worked under contractors with no job security.
He said the cleaners have now been issued appointment letters, and their recruitment spans the three senatorial districts of the state.
Okungbowa also highlighted the positive impact of the governor’s decision on the welfare of the cleaners, noting that the new appointments not only provide job security but also offer career growth opportunities within the civil service.
He emphasized that this move aligns with the administration’s commitment to uplifting the standard of living for all Edo residents by creating more stable and sustainable employment opportunities.
The HOS added that the direct employment of cleaners is part of a broader effort to ensure that public sector jobs are accessible and rewarding for the people of Edo.
