Power supply to several areas in Abuja, including the Presidential Villa, Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, and Mabushi, has been disrupted following a case of vandalism.
The incident occurred when criminals damaged the 132kV transmission line and stole the underground cable that supplies bulk electricity to the Central Area transmission substation in Katampe.
In addition, they made off with a 40-meter section of 1x500mm XLPE conductor.
As stated by Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs for the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN,the disruption has impacted over 60% of Abuja’s power supply.
The incident, which occurred near the Menillum Park axis of the city, affected eight distribution feeders that supply power to the Central Area.
Mbah emphasized that the 132kV underground cable plays a vital role in transporting electricity from TCN’s Central Area Transmission Substation to AEDC, which distributes power to customers in the affected regions.
The vandals’ actions have significantly interrupted power delivery to residents in parts of the city, including key locations such as Wuse, Jabi, and parts of Garki.

To address the situation, TCN has dispatched a team of engineers to repair the damaged infrastructure and restore power.
Mbah urged affected residents to remain patient as efforts to resolve the issue are underway.
The TCN also expressed concern over the ongoing problem of cable vandalism, which has become a recurring issue in the country, causing widespread disruptions in power supply.
The company appealed to the public to be vigilant and protect critical transmission equipment to prevent further incidents.
Meanwhile, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, has informed its customers of the ongoing power outage through an official notice, explaining that the fault stems from the damage to the 132kV lines between Katampe and the AT5 Central Area Transmission Station.
Affected areas include the Federal Secretariat, Wuse Zones 1-7, Central Mosque, Energy Commission, Transcorp Hotel, Eagle Square, Yar’adua Centre, as well as various districts such as Maitama, Kado Estate, Jabi, and Garki.
