Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has assured residents that his administration will implement the Supreme Court’s verdict on the state’s local government elections after due consultations.
Credible News reports that the apex court, in a ruling on Friday, declared the October 5, 2024, local government election invalid.
Addressing the state in a broadcast on Sunday, Fubara stated that his legal team has made a request to obtain the Certified True Copt of the judgment before taking necessary actions.
In line with the court’s decision, the governor directed Heads of Local Government Administration, HLGAs, to immediately take over the 23 councils. He instructed outgoing chairmen to hand over by Monday and ensure a smooth transition until fresh elections are conducted.
Amid the unfolding political developments, Fubara urged residents to remain calm, reaffirming his commitment to governance, due process, and constitutional principles.
Meanwhile, in a separate judgment on Friday, the Supreme Court barred the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from releasing funds to the Rivers State government. The court cited what it described as the state’s failure to comply with previous court orders.
Additionally, the apex court dismissed a cross-appeal by Fubara challenging the legitimacy of the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly. The five-man panel, led by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, upheld the Assembly’s validity and ordered Amaewhule to resume sitting immediately with elected lawmakers.
