The Nigerian Senate has ruled out an investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stating that no formal petition has been submitted.
Senate spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu said that the legislative body does not initiate probes based on media reports or social media discussions. He emphasized that a formal complaint must be filed before any investigation can commence.
The allegations were made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who claimed that Akpabio made inappropriate advances both in his office and at his residence in Akwa Ibom. Her accusations have sparked widespread debate, with calls for a thorough probe.
Adaramodu stated that the only matter currently before the Senate regarding Akpoti-Uduaghan is her alleged violation of the chamber’s standing orders. He stressed that any new issue must follow due process before being addressed.
Amid the controversy, Akpabio’s wife, Ekaette, has filed a ₦250 billion defamation lawsuit against Akpoti-Uduaghan, challenging the allegations and seeking legal redress.
The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has urged an independent investigation, expressing concern over the potential damage to the Senate’s credibility. The group insisted that public officials must uphold ethical standards and accountability.
Some political figures, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, have suggested that the Senate conduct an internal inquiry to preserve its integrity. However, Akpabio’s media team dismissed the idea, reiterating that a formal complaint is required for any legislative action.
The Senate maintains that its decisions are based on due process and official documentation. As of now, no petition has been submitted to warrant an investigation into the allegations against Akpabio.
