President Bola Tinubu held a closed-door meeting on Wednesday with members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, including Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda, at the State House.

The lawmakers arrived in two white buses, with Deputy Speaker Meranda leading the group, while Speaker Obasa arrived separately a few minutes later.

The meeting follows a prolonged leadership crisis within the Assembly.

After the meeting, lawmakers were seen jubilantly singing “on your mandate we shall stand” and cheering the president as he made his way to his office.

A source privy to the meeting stated that “everything has been resolved,” although no official statement was issued.

The crisis began on January 13, 2025, when Obasa was removed as Speaker by a majority of the 40-member House, citing allegations of misconduct and other offenses.

His deputy at the time, Mojisola Meranda, was swiftly elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female to hold the position in Lagos State.

Obasa contested his removal, arguing that it took place while he was out of the country.

However, Meranda’s supporters, numbering 36 lawmakers, upheld the decision and affirmed her position as Speaker.

Following weeks of turmoil, Obasa was reinstated as Speaker on March 3, 2025, after Meranda resigned and was immediately re-elected as Deputy Speaker.

In her resignation speech, Meranda was praised for her leadership and ability to bring peace to the Assembly.

Lawmakers lauded her adherence to party rules and her strength in handling the situation with grace and humility.
