The Abia State Post Transplant Persons Association of Nigeria, ASPTPAN has called for collaboration between the government and stakeholders to make life-saving medications more affordable and accessible for kidney transplant patients.

In a statement issued in Umuahia on Friday, the association’s Secretary, Dr. Clement Ifenkoronye, emphasized the need for government intervention to help post-transplant patients procure essential medications, ensuring a better quality of life.

ASPTPAN, a support group for transplant patients in Abia, marked World Kidney Day on March 13 with an awareness campaign, including a sponsored radio program on kidney health.

The association’s President, Prof. Remy Mejeha, highlighted the importance of kidney care and urged Nigerians to adopt healthy habits such as drinking adequate water, avoiding over-the-counter medications, and undergoing regular medical check-ups.

The group raised concerns over the rising cost of post-transplant medications, warning that many patients are at risk of kidney rejection and even death due to financial constraints. The situation has worsened with the sharp increase in the dollar-to-naira exchange rate, making essential drugs unaffordable for many.

Kidney transplantation is the definitive treatment for End-Stage Renal Disease, a condition where the kidneys lose their ability to function effectively. However, post-transplant patients require lifelong medications to sustain their kidney function and prevent organ rejection.

ASPTPAN urged the government at all levels to step in and subsidize these medications, ensuring that transplant patients receive the care they need without financial hardship.

This year’s World Kidney Day was themed “Are You OK? Detect Early, Protect Kidney Health,” reinforcing the importance of early detection and prevention of kidney diseases.
