The Amayanabo of Abalama, King Dr. A. B. Big Tom Tom JP, has distanced himself from a Thanksgiving Service and Civic Reception in honour of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, stating that the event poses security risks and could escalate political tension in Rivers State.
In a letter to the Commissioner of Police the monarch expressed shock that he learned about the event on Facebook despite being the paramount ruler of Abalama.
He recalled that in February 2025, Dr. D. A. Kelly, a known ally of Wike, had visited him with a letter dated January 17, notifying him of a personal thanksgiving service. However, the king said he later discovered that the planned event was much larger and had political undertones.
“To my greatest surprise and without my knowledge and consent, information is all over social media, radio, and television concerning the event,” he stated.

Raising concerns over the political crisis in Rivers State, the monarch stressed that the community had resolved against hosting any political activity to safeguard its people. He noted that despite multiple attempts to reach Kelly, now the Director-General of the Border Communities Development Agency, there was no response.
“I’m very conscious of insecurity because of my old age and for the safety of my people,” the king added.
Declaring Abalama a non-partisan community, he distanced himself and his people from the event, warning that the organisers had no right to proceed without his approval.
He urged the Commissioner of Police to take immediate action, stating, “Abalama is an autonomous community with a king, and nobody has the right to organise such an event without my knowledge and the consent of my council of chiefs.”
