Emirate tussle in Kano

Kano is on edge as locals prepare to mark the end of Ramadan. Their anxiety  borders on fear of a possible clash of two parallel Sallah Durbar festivals featuring the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, and the 16th Emir, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The long-standing emirate dispute has taken a new turn, intensifying amid an ongoing legal battle.

Bayero officially notified the Kano State Police Command of his planned festivities through a letter signed by his Private Secretary, Abdullahi Haruna Kwaru. The letter outlined a schedule featuring traditional events such as Hawan Sallah, Hawan Daushe, and Hawan Nassarawa, culminating in a cultural celebration. He emphasized that this year’s festival coincides with his fifth anniversary on the throne and expressed hopes for a peaceful celebration.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has instructed the four recognized emirates, under the leadership of Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, to fully prepare for the Sallah Durbar festival. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf made the announcement while hosting the first and second-class emirs at a Ramadan Iftar gathering, assuring residents that they would not miss out on the annual festivities.

The Sallah Durbar is a major cultural event in Kano, attracting visitors from across Nigeria and beyond. The festival features a grand display of horse-riding by the Emir and his entourage, showcasing the rich traditions of the Hausa-Fulani people. The Emir also pays homage to the Government House, a key aspect of the celebrations.

However, tensions have risen as both Bayero and Sanusi plan to carry out similar activities. While Governor Yusuf is set to receive Sanusi at the Government House, Bayero is expected to visit Federal Government officials and top APC members at a separate, undisclosed location. This parallel scheduling has raised fears of possible unrest in the ancient city.

Security concerns remain high, with the Kano Police Command yet to comment on the situation. Newly posted Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has, however, assured residents of safety and pledged to protect lives and property throughout the celebrations.

Last year, authorities banned the Sallah Durbar festival due to tensions surrounding the emirate dispute. With both factions now proceeding with their own events, all eyes are on Kano to see whether the celebrations will be peaceful or escalate into conflict.

As preparations intensify, security agencies are expected to take measures to prevent any possible breakdown of law and order, ensuring that the revered festival proceeds without incident.
