Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, a former Bayelsa State Governor and serving lawmaker under the People’s Democratic Party has strongly criticized civilian dictatorship, describing it as equally damaging as military rule. He emphasized the need for Nigeria’s political elite to uphold constitutional principles and deepen democracy.
Speaking at the 60th birthday colloquium of former Imo State Governor, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, in Abuja on Monday, Dickson underscored the importance of democratic values and citizen empowerment. The event, themed “Is Democracy Failing in Africa?”, brought together political leaders and stakeholders to discuss the challenges facing democracy on the continent.
The senator highlighted that democracy remains superior to autocracy or dictatorship, but warned that without active civic participation, it risks failure. He stressed the necessity for Nigerians to assert their rights through education, sensitization, and active engagement with governance. He also called on the political class to adhere strictly to the Constitution, laws, and due process.

“A democracy cannot thrive with a docile and uninformed citizenry,” Dickson stated. “Citizens must be aware of their rights and responsibilities, refusing to be manipulated along ethnic and religious lines. Only through an enlightened and engaged population can we build a democracy that truly serves the people.”
The lawmaker emphasized grassroots mobilization as a crucial strategy for sustaining democratic governance. He urged leaders to take responsibility for educating and organizing the public, ensuring that democracy delivers its promised benefits. He argued that accountability and informed participation were essential for the system to function effectively.
Commending Ihedioha, Dickson acknowledged his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic growth. He praised the former Imo governor’s political journey from his early days as an aide to late Senate President Chuba Okadigbo to his role as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. Reflecting on Ihedioha’s short-lived governorship, Dickson expressed regret over the circumstances that led to his removal but lauded his resilience and continued influence in national politics.
