China has emerged as the greatest threat to American interests worldwide, a US intelligence report stated on Tuesday, citing the Asian powerhouse’s growing military and cyber capabilities.
The Annual Threat Assessment highlighted Beijing’s intensified pressure on Taiwan and its extensive cyber operations targeting the United States. These actions, the report noted, reflect China’s increasing influence and ambitions, positioning it as the most comprehensive military challenge to US national security.
While acknowledging China’s caution compared to Russia, Iran, and North Korea, the assessment warned of Beijing’s steady efforts to expand its coercive influence. China has been strengthening its arsenal, developing hypersonic weapons, stealth aircraft, and cyber warfare tools while advancing in space technology and nuclear capabilities.

US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard emphasized China’s status as the most capable strategic competitor, pointing to intelligence findings on its expanding military power. She underscored that China is determined to challenge US dominance in key areas, including cybersecurity, intelligence gathering, and geopolitical influence.
The report suggested that China would persist in countering what it perceives as a US-led effort to discredit its global image and undermine the Chinese Communist Party. By deploying subversive tactics, Beijing aims to weaken American stability both domestically and internationally.
Beyond China, the assessment outlined other significant threats, including Russia’s aggression, North Korea’s missile advancements, and Iran’s regional activities. It also pointed to the dangers posed by transnational criminal organizations, such as Mexican drug cartels and extremist groups, all of which contribute to an increasingly complex global security landscape.
