The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has reiterated its commitment to achieving the goals set by the United Nations to reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities.
The Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, made this known while opening a one-day seminar in Abuja focused on reviewing the Marrakech Declaration on road safety. The event brought together stakeholders, experts, and NGOs dedicated to road safety advocacy.
The UN General Assembly had earlier declared 2011 to 2020 as the Decade of Action for Road Safety through Resolution 64/255. The initiative aimed to stabilize and reduce projected road traffic deaths globally. Building on that, the Marrakech Declaration, adopted in February during the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Morocco, calls on governments to prioritize road safety and ensure continuous funding for strategic interventions.
Mohammed emphasized that the FRSC, as Nigeria’s lead agency in road traffic management and safety administration, has been at the forefront of road safety campaigns. He highlighted the Corps’ participation in the first Global Road Safety Conference in Moscow in 2009, which led to the initial UN Decade of Action. Nigeria, under the FRSC, was among the first nations to launch the UN-led global road safety campaign.
He reaffirmed FRSC’s commitment to supporting the UN’s second Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021–2030). He stressed that the Corps would continue to implement measures that align with the objectives of the campaign to create safer roads across the country.

Mohammed expressed gratitude to road safety stakeholders and NGOs for their unwavering support in promoting road safety. He specifically commended Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, the founder of Kwapda’as Road Safety Demand, for her role in advancing the global road safety agenda. He noted that her contributions during the Marrakech conference were instrumental in shaping the discussions being reviewed at the seminar.
Dongban-Mensem, who also serves as the President of the Court of Appeal, praised the FRSC for its dedication to improving road safety in Nigeria. She encouraged NGOs to intensify their advocacy efforts and collaborate in pushing for stronger road safety measures. She further reaffirmed her organization’s commitment to aggressively pursuing road safety goals.
The seminar featured expert discussions on the Marrakech Declaration, with recommendations made for enhancing road safety policies and actions. Stakeholders examined strategies to ensure that Nigeria continues to meet international road safety standards.
In recognition of Nigeria’s commitment to road safety, two prestigious awards won by the country in the sector were publicly presented during the event. The awards underscored the nation’s efforts in fostering safer roads and reducing traffic-related incidents.
