Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has stepped into the controversy surrounding a query issued to a nursing student, Osato Edobor over a viral video recorded during the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The governor directed the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences to withdraw the query, bringing an end to the disciplinary action that had sparked widespread reactions.
The incident at the Dome Event Centre, Asaba, during the Renewed Hope Initiative’s donation of 10,000 professional kits (Crocs and scrubs) to midwives in the South-South zone and its ripple effects had generated massive reactions on social media platforms
A group of student nurses, in a moment of excitement, added a playful twist to a welcome chant for the First Lady. The modified chant, which included the phrase “Na Your Mama,” quickly gained attention on social media.
In response, the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences issued a query letter to Nurse Osato Edobor, citing unauthorized social media publication and misconduct. The letter, signed by the Provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, demanded a written explanation within 24 hours, warning of possible disciplinary action. The development ignited debates on social media, with many questioning whether the students’ actions warranted punishment.

Following the public outcry, Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme confirmed that the query had been withdrawn.
The Office of the First Lady of Nigeria also addressed the situation in a statement signed by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi. The statement acknowledged the students’ enthusiasm and described their actions as spontaneous and light-hearted rather than malicious.
While affirming the importance of discipline in educational institutions, the statement stressed that students should feel safe to express themselves within reasonable limits. It noted that the First Lady’s visit was meant to inspire and uplift healthcare professionals and expressed hope that the event would remain a positive experience for all involved.
As the dust settles, the episode serves as a reminder of the power of social media in shaping narratives and influencing institutional decisions in today’s digital age.
