Authorities in Kano have arrested a 20-year-old man, Usman Sagiru in connection with a deadly attack at the palace of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II. The violent incident took place on Sunday, March 30, as the Emir’s entourage was returning from Eid prayers.
A group of assailants, including Sagiru and others still at large, allegedly ambushed the Emir’s security detail, targeting vigilante operatives. During the attack, Surajo Rabiu, a vigilante from Sabon Titi Jaba Quarters, was stabbed and later succumbed to his injuries. Another operative, Aminu Suleman from Kofar Mata Quarters, sustained injuries and is receiving treatment at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano.
Eyewitnesses described the attack as chaotic. The Emir’s security team was caught off guard, allowing the attackers to strike. Panic spread as people fled, leaving the vigilantes vulnerable. Security operatives later intervened to restore order.
Kano State Police spokesperson Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed Sagiru’s arrest and stated that the authorities had invited Shamakin Kano, Alhaji Wada Isyaku, for questioning. The police believe his insight could aid the ongoing investigation.

Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel as they work to maintain order. The police assured the public that no stone would be left unturned in the pursuit of justice.
Meanwhile, the investigation continues as authorities intensify efforts to track down other suspects involved in the attack. Concerned community members are calling for stricter security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
