A fire broke out Thursday morning at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, affecting the Lagos State Ferry Services, LAGFERRY, vessel, “Igbega Eko.”

The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. while the vessel was going to Victoria Island. Emergency responders swiftly moved into action to manage the situation.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, confirmed the incident through a statement issued by its General Manager, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel. He stated that upon receiving the distress call, LASWA mobilized its emergency response team to the scene. The team worked in close coordination with LAGFERRY officials, boat operators, and other first responders.

Fortunately, all passengers and crew members on board were safely evacuated from the vessel. However, four passengers sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention. Authorities assured the public that no fatalities were reported, and safety measures were promptly followed.

A preliminary investigation into the cause of the fire will be conducted by LASWA in collaboration with LAGFERRY and other relevant stakeholders. The investigation aims to assess the incident thoroughly and determine any necessary improvements in safety measures.

Emmanuel emphasized that safety remains LASWA’s highest priority, and the authority is committed to implementing any recommendations that arise from the investigation to enhance fire prevention protocols across the waterways.

LASWA also reassured the public that ferry operations would continue as scheduled. Passengers were urged to stay calm, follow safety guidelines, and trust in the authority’s commitment to ensuring their safety while using the waterways.
