At least six people were killed and several others sustained various degrees of injuries in a crash involving an 18-seater commercial bus on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Saturday.

The crash, which occurred during the afternoon rush hour, has caused severe traffic disruption, with a major gridlock building up for several hours as commuters have been left stranded.

The incident took place around a busy stretch of the highway, near the Ojodu Berger area, known for its heavy traffic flow. Eyewitnesses report that the bus, which was heading towards Lagos, collided with a stationary truck, leading to a violent impact that left the bus mangled and debris scattered across the highway.

The accident has resulted in tragic fatalities, with emergency responders, including officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps and the National Emergency Management Agency, working tirelessly to clear the wreckage and rescue those trapped inside the bus. Several victims, some critically injured, were rushed to nearby hospitals for immediate medical attention. The condition of some survivors remains critical, with authorities urging people to donate blood and assist in any way possible.

As of the latest update, rescue operations are still ongoing, with teams battling to extricate any remaining survivors and manage the aftermath of the collision. The authorities have also called for caution as more emergency vehicles arrive on the scene, further adding to the congestion on the expressway.

The incident has left many commuters stuck in traffic, and the authorities are working to redirect traffic to alternate routes while the cleanup and investigation continue.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but initial reports suggest that reckless driving, possibly involving speeding and insufficient caution, might have contributed to the crash. The authorities have yet to release the identities of the victims or the exact number of those injured.
