Oba Abimbola Owoade was crowned Saturday as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo marking the beginning of a new era for the ancient Yoruba kingdom.
He succeeds Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, who reigned for over five decades before his passing on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83.
The historic coronation ceremony on the fields of Oliveth Baptist High School, Oyo, drew a large gathering of dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders, and members of the public.
The colourful event reflected the deep cultural heritage and royal prestige of the Alaafin stool—one of the most revered positions in Yoruba land.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde presented the royal crown to Oba Owoade in a symbolic gesture of leadership and continuity. The governor was accompanied by prominent traditional rulers including the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams.
Their presence underscored the significance of the occasion to the Yoruba cultural and political landscape.
In preparation for the event, the Oyo State Government ensured tight security by deploying a large number of law enforcement personnel across strategic points in Oyo town and its environs. Road traffic was coordinated, and emergency response teams were also on standby to manage the large influx of guests and maintain order throughout the celebration.

Credible News recalls that on January 13, Oba Owoade officially received the staff and instrument of office from Governor Makinde during a brief event at the Governor’s office in Ibadan.
The new Alaafin also fulfilled the traditional requirements of ascension by completing the sacred 21-day Oro Ipebi rites on March 29, 2025. These rites, held in seclusion, are considered essential for the spiritual and cultural preparation of a new monarch, connecting the king with his ancestors and fortifying him for leadership.
The installation of Oba Owoade is seen as a pivotal moment for the Oyo Kingdom, with many hoping it will usher in a period of unity, cultural renaissance, and socio-economic development.
The new Alaafin, known for his humility, scholarship, and understanding of Yoruba traditions, is expected to bring fresh vision to the royal institution while preserving its historical legacy.
