Christian Chukwu, former Super Eagles coach and one of Nigeria’s most celebrated football figures, has passed away at the age of 74 on Saturday.

The revered player and coach passed away on Saturday. As at press time, details surrounding the cause of his death were yet to be confirmed.

Dr Segun Odegbami, Chukwu’s mate in the Green Eagles, broke the news on social media, writing:

“My Chairman has passed on.

I just received the news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and team mate, one of the greatest football players, for met captain and coach of Nigeria’s national football team, has passed on.

Babuje, Emmanuel Okala, MON, gave me the sad news a few minutes ago!

May ‘Onyim’ find peace with Our Creator in Heaven, and console his family.”

Chukwu, fondly called “Chairman” by fans and colleagues, was one of Nigeria’s most respected figures in football. As captain, he led the national team, then known as the Green Eagles, to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, title in 1980. Nigeria defeated Algeria 3–0 in the final held in Lagos, sealing Chukwu’s legacy as a national hero.

At club level, he was a key figure in Enugu Rangers’ golden era during the 1970s. Under his leadership, the team won multiple domestic titles and lifted the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977.

After his playing career, Chukwu transitioned into coaching, where he continued to make significant contributions to the game.

He managed the Nigerian national team between 2003 and 2005, guiding the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish at the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia. He also coached the Kenyan national team and worked with several local clubs, including Enugu Rangers and Heartland FC.

In 2019, Chukwu’s health challenges sparked a nationwide campaign for assistance. Businessman Femi Otedola notably donated $50,000 for his medical treatment in London, highlighting the widespread respect he commanded across the country.

In January 2021, Chukwu was forced to deny viral false reports of his death, expressing embarrassment over the misleading claims. He stated then that he was healthy and grateful to be alive to celebrate his 70th birthday.

Christian Chukwu’s life and achievements have been documented in various publications, including a biography that captures his journey from humble beginnings to football greatness.

He is survived by his wife and children. Tributes have begun pouring in from across the globe, as Nigerians and football enthusiasts mourn the loss of one of the game’s finest.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
