The Nigerian Army has made history with the appointment of Lieutenant Colonel Anele Onyinyechi Appolonia as Acting Director of Army Public Relations.
This marks the first time a woman will head the Army’s public relations department, breaking a long-standing gender barrier in the military’s communication structure.
Lt. Col. Anele will assume her new responsibilities on April 22, succeeding Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, who has been posted to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.
A seasoned communications officer, Anele is a member of Direct Regular Course 15 and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.
Her extensive experience in military public relations spans various roles, including her service as Public Relations Officer in the Office of the Chief of Army Staff.
Before her elevation, she completed a six-month strategic course at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, after which she was deployed to the Department of Civil-Military Relations. She remained in that department until her recent appointment.

Lt. Col. Anele’s appointment comes at a time when the military is placing increased emphasis on strategic communication, transparency, and public engagement.
Her new role places her at the helm of directing the Army’s information management, media relations, and public messaging efforts nationwide.
This historic appointment further reflects the Nigerian Army’s commitment to competence, professionalism, and the recognition of gender diversity in its leadership structure.
