A heavy rainstorm has killed one person and destroyed several properties at Ilesha-Baruba, in Baruten Local  Government Area, Kwara State.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, rendered many residents homeless and caused widespread damage in the affected communities.

Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Mr Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, expressed sympathy with the victims and assured them of government intervention.

In a statement issued in Ilorin on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Shehu Abdulkadir, the Speaker extended condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for strength to bear the loss.

“I wish to extend our sincere condolences and deep sympathy to our people who are victims of rainstorms across the state, especially the one that happened on Friday which claimed a life in Ilesha-Baruba,” he said.

The Speaker urged disaster management agencies at both state and federal levels to move in swiftly with relief materials and other forms of support.

This is not the first case of rainstorm damage in Kwara this year. Earlier in April, a similar incident in Ogele, Asa LGA, displaced many residents and damaged schools, health centres, and mosques.

Reports also showed that about 50 houses were destroyed in another rainstorm in the same area, leaving hundreds of people without shelter.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency had forecasted a late onset of rainfall in 2025, with expectations of extreme weather and flash floods across northern and central states, including Kwara.

Residents in affected communities have begun counting their losses, while appeals for prompt and coordinated disaster response continue to grow across the state.
