A devastating rainstorm tore through Itobe District in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State on Wednesday night, leaving no fewer than 500 houses in ruins and hundreds of residents homeless.

The storm, accompanied by fierce winds and torrential rainfall, caused widespread destruction, affecting schools, health centers, electric poles, churches, and a mosque. Several residents sustained injuries, while properties worth millions of naira were damaged.

The Ejeh of Ofu, Alhaji Akwu Obaje, described the situation as catastrophic, calling for urgent intervention to assist those affected.

“The scene is chaotic, with roofs torn off buildings, trees uprooted, and power lines snapped,” he said, noting that six villages—Itobe, Adumu, Oladebu, Ajegwu, and Itagidi—suffered extensive damage. He emphasized the urgent need for relief efforts, urging the government, corporate bodies, and compassionate Nigerians to intervene.

“The destruction has left many families without shelter, and the community is in dire need of support. The government and well-meaning individuals must respond promptly to provide relief to the victims and help them rebuild their lives,” Obaje stated. Many residents affected by the storm are now struggling to find shelter and basic necessities.

Mr. Atabo Okolo from Oladebu expressed his distress, saying, “We need immediate intervention to rebuild our lives because this destruction has worsened the hardship, we are already facing due to the economic challenges in the country.”

Momoh Alifiya from Adumu shared similar concerns, describing the situation as overwhelming. “Many of us have lost everything. We are in desperate need of food, medical aid, and a place to stay.”

Usman Gene from Itobe-Niniya appealed to the authorities for swift action. “We are urging the government and relevant agencies to work together to support us and help our communities recover from this disaster.”

With the rainy season just beginning, residents fear that future rainstorms could bring further devastation if preventive measures are not put in place.

Community leaders and affected individuals are calling for the implementation of long-term solutions, including improved drainage systems and stronger housing structures, to mitigate future risks.

Authorities are being urged to deploy emergency relief efforts, provide temporary shelters, and support the reconstruction of affected areas.

The disaster has left an entire community in distress, with urgent calls for intervention echoing across the region. As families struggle to rebuild their lives, the need for swift and effective action has never been more pressing.
