Carlo Ancelotti is set to step down as manager of Real Madrid and assume a new role as head coach of the Brazilian national team, marking a significant transition from club football to the international stage.
The Italian tactician, 65, exits the Santiago Bernabeu as the most decorated manager in UEFA Champions League history, having claimed the title five times — including two during his second stint at Madrid in 2022 and 2024.
His recent tenure also saw him complete a rare sweep of league titles across Europe’s top five leagues after securing the La Liga crown in 2022.
Initially seen as a stabilizing figure following Zinedine Zidane’s departure in 2021, Ancelotti defied expectations by rejuvenating Real Madrid and guiding the team to multiple domestic and international triumphs.

However, a dip in performance this season — including a Copa del Rey loss to Barcelona and a Champions League exit at the hands of Arsenal — appeared to signal the end of his Madrid chapter.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) officially announced Ancelotti’s appointment on Monday, making him the first foreigner since 1965 to manage the Seleção. He replaces Dorival Junior, who was dismissed following a string of poor World Cup qualifying results.
Brazil has endured a rough campaign, recording just three wins in 14 qualifiers. Ancelotti is set to begin his duties on May 26 ahead of crucial fixtures against Ecuador and Paraguay in June. The CBF hopes his winning pedigree will restore Brazil’s dominance in global football.
Ancelotti is expected to benefit from his familiarity with Brazilian stars like Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, and Eder Militão — all of whom played under him at Madrid.
His arrival brings renewed hope that Brazil can recapture its World Cup-winning pedigree, with CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues calling the appointment “a statement to the world”.
