The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, is marking its 61st anniversary with a focus on its longstanding dedication to national defence and renewed efforts to strengthen regional security cooperation.
Air Commodore Sylvester Eyoma, chairman of the organising committee for the NAF@61 celebration and 4th African Air Forces Forum, said during a press briefing on Tuesday in Abuja that the service had transformed significantly in its structure, manpower, and equipment over the years.
He said the air force’s role in combatting terrorism, insurgency, and banditry had become more prominent due to enhanced air power and surveillance capabilities. “Today, we are celebrating 61 years of dedication to duty and unwavering commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty,” Eyoma said.
According to him, the theme of this year’s celebration – “Optimising Civil-Military Relations in a Joint Operational Environment for Enhanced Air Operations” – reflects the NAF’s recognition of the citizenry as key partners in national security.

Anniversary activities began earlier this year with the Chief of the Air Staff’s Literary Competition, which ran from February 10 to 22. Open Day visits and career talks across NAF bases, which started on May 1, are set to end on Tuesday. These engagements have allowed the public to interact with NAF personnel and learn more about the service.
As part of its quick impact projects, the NAF has constructed a clinic in Rukubi, Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The project follows the loss of civilian lives in an airstrike in the community in January 2023.
A key highlight of the celebrations will be the induction of the Augusta 109S Trekker Helicopter into the Presidential Air Fleet on Friday by President Bola Tinubu.
The 61st anniversary will transition into the 4th African Air Forces Forum, which takes place on May 22 and 23. The event is expected to draw over 2,000 participants, including 30 air forces, 12 chiefs of air staff, 45 exhibitors, and major defence and aerospace companies such as Airbus, Embraer, Diamond Aircraft, HAVELSAN, and Proforce.
Eyoma said the forum, themed “Strengthening Collaborations in Advanced Aerospace Technologies for Enhanced National and Regional Security,” will promote regional cooperation and showcase advances in air power needed to tackle shared security challenges.
