Crystal Palace made history on Saturday by winning their first-ever major trophy, defeating Manchester City 1-0 in a dramatic FA Cup final at Wembley.

The hero of the evening was Nigerian-born England midfielder Eberechi Eze, whose clinical 16th-minute finish capped off a brilliant counterattack and marked the pinnacle of his rise from youth rejection to football stardom.

Palace’s victory was sealed by a combination of tactical discipline, inspired goalkeeping from Dean Henderson, and a touch of luck.

Henderson, who made multiple outstanding saves throughout the match, crucially denied a penalty from Omar Marmoush in the first half—after controversially avoiding a red card for a suspected handball outside the area.

City, playing in their second consecutive FA Cup final, once again faltered on the big stage. Despite a dominant start and an ultra-attacking lineup chosen by Pep Guardiola, they failed to break down a resolute Palace side, managed brilliantly by Oliver Glasner. The loss capped a disappointing season for City, likely to be their first without silverware since 2016–17.

Eze’s goal followed a swift transition move started deep inside Palace’s own half. Jean-Philippe Mateta’s hold-up play released Daniel Munoz, whose cross was met by Eze’s perfectly-timed volley, leaving City’s backup keeper Stefan Ortega helpless.

Controversy arose in the 29th minute when Henderson raced off his line to challenge Erling Haaland and appeared to handle the ball outside the box. VAR ruled it was not an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, sparing him a red card. Just minutes later, Henderson dived to his right to stop Marmoush’s penalty after a reckless foul by Tyrick Mitchell.

City’s frustrations mounted as Henderson continued his heroics, denying efforts from Jeremy Doku and Claudio Echeverri late on. The defeat also raises questions about Guardiola’s tactical choices, particularly his decision to field a team without a holding midfielder, which left City exposed to Palace’s counterattacks.

For Crystal Palace fans, it was a night of ecstasy and long-awaited redemption after previous FA Cup final heartbreaks in 1990 and 2016. The triumph also secures them a place in next season’s UEFA Europa League.

As Eze and Henderson lifted the trophy, Palace not only ended a 120-year wait for silverware but also etched their names into English football history.
