The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee to plan and coordinate the 2025 Democracy Day celebration.
The committee, chaired by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume is tasked with ensuring a memorable and reflective national event.
Akume was represented at the committee’s inaugural meeting by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.
Speaking at the meeting, the SGF highlighted that Democracy Day presents an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the struggles and sacrifices of past national heroes who championed the country’s freedom from colonial rule and military dictatorship.
Hr said the observance is also a chance to evaluate democratic progress and recognize those who endured great hardship to secure the nation’s current system of governance.
He also emphasized that the event is not just about remembrance but also serves as a platform for the government to present its achievements to citizens.

Akume noted that the Democracy Day celebration will offer the opportunity to showcase the administration’s accomplishments under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and reaffirm commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He encouraged the committee to work in harmony with the president’s vision to advance national development and transparency.
This year’s celebration will feature several activities spread across a week, beginning with a World Press Briefing and a Juma’at service.
Other events will include a Christian church service, a youth-centered programme, and a public lecture.
The celebrations will culminate in a presidential address and a national parade on June 12, 2025.
The committee comprises senior government officials, cabinet ministers, presidential advisers, top law enforcement officers, and permanent secretaries across key ministries and agencies.
They are expected to plan, organize and execute all activities, document the events for posterity, and ensure broad engagement with the Nigerian public.
The committee has also been empowered to co-opt other individuals or organizations relevant to the success of the programme and carry out any additional tasks necessary for the seamless execution of the national event.
