Over the years, the UEFA Champions League has earned its reputation as Europe’s premier club football competition. Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid are the undisputed kings of the tournament, having secured a record 15 titles. Meanwhile, Liverpool lead among Premier League clubs with six Champions League trophies.

However, the competition has also had its share of controversy. At least four clubs have reportedly been banned from participating in UEFA competitions due to serious misconduct, as reported by FourFourTwo.

Beşiktaş

One of Turkey’s most prominent football clubs, Beşiktaş, was banned from UEFA competitions in 2013. The sanction came after allegations of domestic match-fixing. Despite appealing the decision, the club was ultimately handed a one-year ban.

Fenerbahçe

Also from Turkey, Fenerbahçe faced a similar fate in 2013 following a match-fixing scandal. UEFA imposed a two-year ban on the club. While the case was under appeal, Fenerbahçe played and lost to Arsenal in a Champions League play-off.

Juventus

Italian giants Juventus were suspended from UEFA competitions for the 2023/24 season. The ban followed allegations of Financial Fair Play (FFP) breaches, marking a significant blow to the storied club.

FK Pobeda

North Macedonian side FK Pobeda received one of the harshest punishments in UEFA history. In 2009, they were handed an eight-year ban for allegedly manipulating the outcome of a Champions League qualifier against Armenia’s FC Pyunik five years earlier. Investigations pointed to irregular betting patterns surrounding the match.

Manchester City (Ban Overturned)

In 2020, UEFA imposed a two-year ban on Premier League champions Manchester City for a “serious breach” of Financial Fair Play regulations. However, the ban was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, CAS, allowing the club to continue competing.

These incidents serve as a reminder that while the Champions League is a stage for glory, UEFA remains firm in upholding the integrity of the game.
