Another football legend departed early Thursday as Nigerians heard the demose of former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai.

He was aged 61 and reported passed on after a prolonged illness which kept him away from the public in recent months.

Though his family has yet to officially announce his passing, a senior official in the Lagos State Government has confirmed the sad news.

Known as Dodo Mayana, Rufai is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers Nigeria has ever produced.

He made 65 appearances for the Super Eagles, proudly representing the country in two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998) and playing a crucial role in Nigeria’s historic victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.

Online search reports that Rufai started his football career playing for Nigerian clubs like Stationery Stores and Femo Scorpions. These clubs gave him the chance to show his goalkeeping skills. Many people began to notice how talented he was.

After proving himself in Nigeria, he moved to Benin Republic, where he played for Dragons de l’Ouémé and AS Police. His performances were so good that European clubs started paying attention to him.

In 1986, Rufai moved to Europe to play professional football. His first European club was Lokeren in Belgium. He later played for Beveren, another club in Belgium. Playing in Europe was not easy, but Peter was hardworking and never gave up.

After some years in Belgium, he moved to the Netherlands to play for Go Ahead Eagles. He then went to Portugal and joined Farense. At Farense, he became one of the most respected goalkeepers in the league. His strong performances caught the attention of Spanish club Deportivo La Coruña.

Playing for Deportivo La Coruña was a big achievement for Peter Rufai. The Spanish league was very competitive, and he had to play against some of the best players in the world. He later joined Hércules, another Spanish club, before retiring from football.

Rufai played for the Nigerian national team for many years. He was the number one goalkeeper for Nigeria in many important tournaments.

He played in the 1984, 1988, 1990, and 1992 editions of the Africa Cup of Nations. However, his biggest achievement came in 1994 when he helped Nigeria win the Africa Cup of Nations. He was a key player in the final match against Zambia.

Rufai also played in two FIFA World Cups for Nigeria. In the 1994 World Cup, he was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper. Nigeria reached the Round of 16, and many people praised Rufai’s performances. He also played in the 1998 World Cup, but Nigeria was eliminated early.

He was known for his great reflexes. He could make difficult saves look easy. His jumping ability and quick reactions made him a very strong goalkeeper.

He was also a leader. Many players respected him because he was calm and confident on the field. His experience helped Nigeria in many important games.

One special thing about Peter Rufai was his ability to stop penalty kicks. Many strikers found it hard to score penalties against him.

After retiring from football, Peter Rufai started working as a coach. He wanted to help young Nigerian goalkeepers become better. He also created a football academy to train young players.

Apart from coaching, he has been involved in different sports projects in Nigeria. He is passionate about football development in the country.
