The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has declared a nationwide strike following the non-payment of June 2025 salaries.
The strike, approved by the union’s National Executive Council, NEC, is being enforced under a strict “No Pay, No Work” policy.
According to the union’s resolution, lecturers will automatically commence industrial action if salaries are delayed more than three days into a new month.
Branches of ASUU at the University of Jos and the University of Abuja have already complied with the directive, with other branches expected to join in the coming days.

ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, confirmed the strike on Monday, July 7. He stated that the decision was in response to the persistent financial hardship caused by frequent salary delays.
Piwuna blamed the worsening situation on the federal government’s transition of university payrolls from the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System, IPPIS, to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System, GIFMIS.
He criticized the “nonchalant attitude” of key government officials regarding the welfare of university lecturers and said efforts to engage the Minister of Education and the Office of the Accountant General have yielded “no meaningful progress.”
“Our members are experiencing hardship. Salaries are often delayed by a week or more,” Piwuna said. “At NEC, we agreed that if salaries are not paid within three days of a new month, members should withdraw their services.”
He also rejected claims that technical glitches in GIFMIS were responsible for the delays, calling it a case of deliberate negligence.
“When funds are eventually released, there are no issues of underpayment or technical failure. The system works, it’s the handlers who are stalling. We believe this delay is intentional,” Piwuna asserted.
