The National Assembly has suspended all legislative proceedings for one week in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.
The announcement was made on Monday through an official statement by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana.
The decision, according to Ogunlana, was made at the directive of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, to enable lawmakers participate fully in the burial activities planned for the late president.
“In honour of his legacy and service to the nation, all legislative activities in the National Assembly are hereby suspended immediately until Tuesday, July 22,” the statement read.
The suspension applies to both chambers of the National Assembly—the Senate and the House of Representatives. All committee meetings, public hearings, and official engagements scheduled for the week have been cancelled or postponed.
Ogunlana further conveyed the condolences of the National Assembly leadership to the Federal Government, the people of Nigeria, and especially to the late president’s home state, Katsina.

“The leadership of both Chambers, on behalf of members and staff of the National Assembly, extend heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; the government and people of Katsina State; and to his wife, children, and the entire Buhari family,” the statement continued.
The Clerk praised Buhari’s legacy, describing him as a leader who will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity, his reputation for personal integrity, and his austere approach to governance.
“President Buhari will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity. May Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus,” the message concluded.
The suspension of plenary sessions is one of the many national tributes pouring in for the late Nigerian leader, who served as a military ruler in the 1980s and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
President Bola Tinubu has already ordered full state honours for his predecessor, including a ceremonial burial to be conducted in line with Islamic rites and official protocol. Dignitaries from across Africa and the international community are expected to attend.
Meanwhile, lawmakers have been urged to reschedule their engagements and remain available to participate in events honouring Buhari’s life and service. Flags at the National Assembly complex have also been flown at half-mast since the news of his passing was confirmed.
