Barcelona football sensation Lamine Yamal is under official investigation after allegations surfaced that he hired individuals with dwarfism to work at his 18th birthday party — a move that could potentially breach Spain’s disability legislation.

According to multiple reports, the young winger, who recently turned 18 and is regarded as one of Europe’s brightest footballing prospects, allegedly enlisted the services of people with dwarfism to entertain guests at his private celebration. The event, reportedly held over the weekend, sparked widespread criticism online and within advocacy circles, prompting government officials to respond swiftly.

Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights has formally requested that state prosecutors and the Office for Combating Hate Crimes investigate whether Yamal’s actions contravened existing disability protection laws. The country’s legal framework prohibits acts that demean, ridicule, or exploit individuals with disabilities, including people with skeletal dysplasias such as achondroplasia — a form of dwarfism.

The Director General for Disability, Jesús Martín, expressed his outrage during an interview with Spain’s EFE news agency. He condemned what he described as “a dangerous display of power and impunity” and emphasized that the law must apply equally to everyone — regardless of fame, wealth, or social influence.

“We are concerned that people with money and power believe themselves to be beyond consequences,” Martín said. “Let the necessary investigations be carried out, and let justice prevail based on the facts. The law is for both the humble and the powerful.”

He also warned of the wider social implications, noting that Yamal’s large following among young people could amplify the impact of such behavior. “A public figure of his stature sets an example. We cannot afford to normalize conduct that may humiliate or stigmatize people with disabilities,” Martín added.

Should prosecutors determine that Yamal’s actions violated the law, he could face a financial penalty of up to €1 million. Additionally, the Association of People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias has indicated its intent to pursue legal action independently, citing moral injury and reputational harm.

Yamal, who only recently returned to pre-season training with FC Barcelona ahead of the 2025/26 season, has yet to publicly comment on the allegations. The club has also not issued a formal response.

The scandal threatens to cast a shadow over the start of Barcelona’s campaign, as the team prepares for upcoming pre-season fixtures, including a friendly against Vissel Kobe on July 27.
