South African midfielder Gabriela Salgado has undergone successful surgery following an injury sustained during the semi-final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations against Nigeria.
The procedure took place on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the Mohamed VI University Hospital in Casablanca, Morocco. Salgado is currently recovering in Rabat under medical supervision.
The injury occurred during the second half of South Africa’s 2–1 loss to Nigeria on July 22 at Stade Larbi Zaouli. She was forced to leave the pitch after suffering a fracture in the middle of her left leg.

The Banyana Banyana team doctor, Dr. Lindi Mokoena, says Salgado will be sidelined for the remainder of the year.
“She will be out for the rest of 2025, but we are grateful for the exceptional care she received from the Banyana Banyana medical team, CAF, and the hospital staff,” said Dr. Mokoena. “We had full confidence in the procedure performed in Morocco, and we sincerely thank CAF and the staff at Mohamed VI University Hospital for their professionalism and support during this time.”
In a touching gesture of sportsmanship, several Nigerian players visited Salgado in the hospital to show their support and wish her a speedy recovery.
