The death of Arise News anchor Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu has thrown Nigeria’s media industry and wider public into mourning.

The 29-year-old journalist, popularly known as Sommie, died on Monday, after an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.

Reports state that armed men stormed her home in the early hours, killing the residence’s security guard during the attack.

In a desperate attempt to escape, Maduagwu sustained severe injuries after jumping from the second floor of the building. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but did not survive.

Eyewitnesses and colleagues allege that her chances of survival were reduced when medical staff delayed treatment, insisting on a police report before attending to her.

The delay, they say, proved fatal. The claim has fuelled a national debate over Nigeria’s emergency healthcare response, with critics highlighting how bureaucracy continues to cost lives in crisis situations.

Arise News, in a statement, described her as “a cherished colleague whose voice engaged and connected with millions.”

The station added that her passing represents a painful loss to journalism and the wider community she served.

Her colleagues and civil society groups are demanding accountability both from security agencies for failing to prevent the armed invasion and from the hospital accused of neglect.

Police authorities confirm investigations are ongoing and stress that those responsible for the attack will be brought to justice.

Public anger has grown rapidly since the tragedy. Commentators argue that her death underscores two longstanding crises in Nigeria: rising insecurity and the inadequacy of emergency medical services.

The case has renewed calls for reforms to eliminate the requirement of police reports before treatment in life-threatening situations.

Maduagwu had only recently returned from the United Kingdom after attending her parents’ 30th wedding anniversary. Beyond journalism, she was also a former beauty queen and a trained lawyer.

Friends and colleagues describe her as warm, courageous, and deeply professional.

Her death, alongside the killing of her security guard, has left families, colleagues, and viewers devastated, with tributes pouring in across the country.
