ARISE News has confirmed the death of one of its anchors, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.

In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of management, the station described Maduagwu, fondly called “Sommie,” as a vibrant journalist who left a lasting impact on audiences.

“Sommie was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.

“We extend our deepest condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time.

“Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits,” the statement added.

The late broadcaster, aged 29, joined ARISE News as an engaging presenter whose work resonated with viewers. A trained lawyer, she was also described as a supportive colleague and a dear friend within and outside the newsroom.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, and is currently being investigated by the Nigeria Police.

Maduagwu was a trained lawyer who transitioned into broadcast journalism, quickly making a name for herself as one of the vibrant young voices on Nigerian television.

Her colleagues and management have extended condolences to her family, describing her passing as a devastating blow not only to ARISE News but also to the entire Nigerian media community.

Her death adds to the rising cases of insecurity in the country.

Despite the Nigerian government promised to end the menace it has been unable to curtail the developments.

The station further noted: “Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”
