Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has demanded the immediate removal of the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.

He accused him of disregarding lawful directives and undermining the governor’s authority as the state’s Chief Security Officer.

Yusuf made the call during an event to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary at Kofar Mata Stadium in Kano metropolis.

The governor alleged that police officers under Bakori’s command withdrew from providing security at the ceremony, despite his clear instructions that they remain in place.

He described the conduct as “embarrassing” and unbefitting of a senior security official on a national day of significance.

“The Commissioner of Police has embarrassed us by his conduct,” Yusuf declared. “His action is unprofessional, unethical, and contrary to what is expected of a security chief on such a historic day for the people of Kano and indeed for Nigeria as a whole.”

Expressing his frustration, Yusuf stressed that the commissioner’s refusal to act in line with directives was unacceptable and posed a challenge to the effective coordination of security in the state.

“On behalf of myself as Chief Security Officer, and on behalf of the good people of Kano State, I call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, today,” he said.

The governor’s remarks have highlighted tensions between state leadership and federal security agencies. While governors are recognized as the chief security officers of their states, the Nigeria Police Force operates under federal command, with state commissioners reporting to the Inspector-General of Police and ultimately the Presidency.

As of the time of the governor’s address, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor CP Bakori had issued a formal response to the allegations. The development has generated widespread discussion in Kano, with many awaiting the federal government’s reaction to Yusuf’s demand.
