The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, OIC, has strongly condemned Wednesday’s military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger.

The Saudi Press Agency reported that the OIC Secretary-General, Hissein Brahim Taha is following with great concern the developments in Niger, which is an OIC member state.

The OIC chief denounced any attempt to seize power by force and demanded the immediate release of the president and the restoration of the rule of law in the country, it added.

Taha expressed his solidarity with the people of Niger and the OIC’s full support for the regional efforts being made toward restoring peace, security, and stability to the West African country, as well as to the entire Sahel region.

Soldiers in Niger Wednesday announced the removal of Bazoum, the democratically elected president.

The country’s Defense and Security Forces confirmed the palace coup in a broadcast on national television late Wednesday, hours after the president was allegedly held hostage.

Their action has provoked widespread international condemnation evem as the Economic Community of West African States  meets in Abuja Sunday to deliberate on its response to the military putsch.
