No fewer than 34 persons were killed when an illegal fuel depot exploded in Cotonou, the Republic of Benin.
Two babies were among the dead, in an incident blamed on smuggled fuel by Interior Minister, Alassane Seidou.
The incident occurred near the border with Nigeria, resulting in a significant fire in the town of Seme Podji.
“A serious fire occurred in the town of Seme Podji.
“Unfortunately we have 34 deaths including two babies. Their bodies are charred because the cause of the fire is smuggled fuel”, Interior Minister said.
In addition to the fatalities, approximately 20 individuals are currently receiving medical treatment, with some reported to be in serious condition.
The incident highlights the dangers associated with fuel smuggling, a common practice along Nigeria’s borders, particularly when government maintained a subsidy to keep petrol prices low.
Nigeria is a prominent oil and gas producer and such incidents underscore the risks associated with the illegal fuel trade. Authorities are working to manage the aftermath of the explosion and provide care to the injured victims as investigations into the incident continue.
