In a devastating turn of events, a fierce fire broke out in the Watt Market in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, resulting in the destruction of items worth millions of naira.
Reports indicate that the fire, which ignited around 2:00 am, wreaked havoc on at least six shops situated near the Hewett Street area within the bustling Watt Market.
Olumayowa Olomola, the Commanding Officer of the Federal Fire Service in Calabar, confirmed the outbreak, attributing it to an electrical surge in one of the shopping malls at the market.
Although an exact estimate of the damage remains unavailable, it is evident that goods worth

millions of naira have been consumed by the flames. Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties.
Olomola emphasized the importance of her team’s swift response, which prevented the fire from spreading to additional shops and neighboring structures.
“My advice is that we should always adopt preventive measures by ensuring we put off all appliances to avoid incident like this”.
She underscored the need for proactive measures, urging everyone to turn off appliances to avert such incidents in the future.
The affected shops include a baby shop, as well as footwear and sportswear outlets, among others.
