In an incident that unfolded last night, gunmen reportedly launch an attack on the Afokang Correctional facility in Calabar, Cross River State. Tragically, a Correctional Service officer loses their life during the attack.
The spokesperson for the State Command of the Correctional Service, Affanga Etim, has confirmed the assault on Thursday.
According to Etim, the attackers did not manage to free any inmates during their assault.
He recounted the harrowing events, stating, “When they arrived, they opened fire on the security team, who bravely responded in kind.
Regrettably, during this exchange, an Assistant Superintendent of Correction was fatally wounded.”
Despite the chaos, no inmate escaped or lost their life during the attack. The assailants were prevented from approaching the main facility.
However, it’s deeply distressing to note that a mother and her six-year-old daughter were injured by stray bullets during the attack.
Etim assures the public that they have swiftly deployed additional armed personnel to the facility, and the situation is now under control. The safety of the facility and those within it remains a top priority.
