World Egg Day was recently observed. It provided an opportunity to consider the nutritional value of eggs while also emphasizing the importance of moderation in their consumption.

Every year on the second Friday of October, World Egg Day is observed. As a result, it was observed on October 13 this year.

The International Egg Commission, a global organization dedicated to the advancement of the egg industry, established the day in 1996 in Vienna, Austria.

Its mission is to raise awareness of the importance of eggs in human nutrition, food security, and overall well-being.

But what is the significance of finding a balance when it comes to consuming eggs and the impact it can have on our overall well-being?

Mrs. Sarah Bulus, a healthy living enthusiast, recognises the nutritional value of eggs. She understands that eggs are a powerhouse of essential nutrients, including protein, vitamins, and minerals.

However, she has also learnt the importance of moderation in her diet and aims to strike a balance in her egg consumption.

She shared her journey of incorporating eggs into her daily meals while being mindful of portion sizes.

Bulus emphasised the need to enjoy eggs as part of a varied and balanced diet rather than relying solely on them.

She believes that moderation allows her to reap the benefits of eggs without overindulging or neglecting other nutrient-rich foods.

Mr. Douglas Akuba, Chief Executive Officer of Green Economy Alternative Africa, said that eggs are a highly nutritious food that provides numerous health benefits.

Akuba, who is also a nutritionist, explained that eggs are packed with essential nutrients such as protein, vitamins (A, B12, D, E, and K), minerals (iron, zinc, and selenium), and antioxidants.

“They are considered a complete protein source, containing all the essential amino acids our bodies need.

“Eggs are rich in choline, a nutrient that is essential for brain development and function.

Choline is particularly important during pregnancy and early childhood as it supports the development of the baby’s brain and helps prevent certain neural tube defects,” he said.

Akuba also pointed out that eggs contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants crucial for maintaining good eye health.

These nutrients help protect against age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, which can lead to vision loss.

According to him, contrary to previous beliefs, studies have shown that moderate egg consumption does not increase the risk of heart disease.

“Eggs can be part of a heart-healthy diet due to their high protein content and presence of healthy fats.

“Eggs are a great food for weight management as they are low in calories but high in protein.

“Protein helps keep you feeling full and satisfied, reducing the likelihood of overeating or snacking on unhealthy foods,” he said.

According to him, the high-quality protein found in eggs is essential for building and repairing muscles. This makes eggs an excellent food choice for athletes and those looking to increase muscle mass.

Akuba mentioned that eggs are a good source of vitamin D, which is essential for calcium absorption and bone health.

“Vitamin D deficiency can lead to weakened bones and an increased risk of fractures.

“Eggs are incredibly versatile and can be prepared in a variety of ways, making them a convenient and easy addition to any meal.”

He, however, explained that while eggs are highly nutritious, excessive intake may lead to an imbalance in other essential nutrients, such as fiber or vitamins from fruits and vegetables.

This year, the theme of World Egg Day is: “Eggs for a healthy future.” The day is an opportunity to make everyone aware that eggs are an excellent, affordable source of high-quality nutrition.

The Executive Secretary of Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria, CS-SUNN, Mr. Sunday Okoronkwo, said that an egg is one of the most environmentally sustainable and cost-effective animal-source proteins available.

Okoronkwo emphasised that World Egg Day also reminds us to explore the role eggs have played throughout history.

“As we celebrate World Egg Day, let us remember that moderation is key to enjoying the health benefits that eggs offer.

“By incorporating eggs into our diet in a balanced way, we can harness their nutritional value while also appreciating the importance of a varied and diverse range of foods.

“Let’s strive for balance and make informed choices that contribute to our overall well-being,” he said.
