The kingmakers in Oyo town have taken Governor Seyi Makinde to court in the ongoing battle to fill the vacant Alaafin stool.

The suit filed at the Oyo State High Court aims to stop the governor from interfering with the selection process for the vacant Alaafin of Oyo position.

The claimants in the suit are the Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Ayoola; Lagunna of Oyo, High Chief Wakeel Oyedepo; Akinniku of Oyo, High Chief Amusa Yusuf; Areago Basorun, Chief Wahab Oyetunji; and the Alapo of Oyo, Chief Gbadebo Mufutau.

They also named as defendants the Oyo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, as well as the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The kingmakers unanimously chose Prince Lukuman Gbadegesin to fill the vacant position of Alaafin of Oyo.

They are requesting that the court prevent Makinde and his agents from overturning Gbadegesin’s selection and “approving or recognising any other candidate” as the next Alaafin “after a duly conducted process for the filling of the vacant stool of Alaafin of Oyo in accordance with the native law, custom, and Chieftaincy Declaration of Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy.”

The kingmakers also want the court to prevent the governor and the other defendants from removing them as Oyo kingmakers or “dissolving the Oyomesi in Council or appointing or selecting warrant chiefs to conduct or start a new process for filling the vacant stool of Alaafin of Oyo.”

They want the court to prevent the defendants from “harassing, disturbing, preventing, or impeding the claimants from carrying out their traditional functions and responsibilities as Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy kingmakers.”
