The Kano State Agency for the Control of Aids has commenced a pre-marital health screening of an additional 147 prospective couples.
The Director-General of the Agency, Dr. Usman Bashir, has overseen a comprehensive screening exercise for prospective couples in Kano. The exercise, aimed at providing medical evaluations and consultations when necessary, serves to ensure the medical fitness of individuals intending to enter into marriage.
Usman Datti, the agency’s Information Officer, issued a statement on Tuesday, disclosing the purpose of the screening exercise. According to the Director-General, the primary objective is to prevent the spread of diseases that could be transmitted through marriage. The screening process involves a range of laboratory tests designed to identify and address any potential health issues or challenges.
Key areas of focus in the exercise include HIV testing, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C screening, Sickle Cell Genotype testing, evaluation for venereal diseases, and pregnancy testing. These tests are intended to promote the well-being of prospective couples and ensure a healthy start to their married lives.
Dr. Usman Bashir emphasized the importance of taking the screening exercise seriously and noted that the State Government has provided adequate facilities and medical personnel to ensure its smooth conduct. Similar screening exercises have been conducted for different sets of couples who recently got married under the State government’s mass wedding program.
The Kano State Government had recently sponsored and officiated the mass wedding of a total of 1,800 couples, which took place at the palace of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Bayero. The beneficiaries, including young individuals, widows, divorcees, and spinsters from all Local Government Areas, participated in the ceremony, which was attended by government officials, religious leaders, and prominent figures such as Governor Abba Yusuf and Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, the leader of Kwankwasiyya.
