President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to launch an electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System , e-CRVS, on Wednesday.
President Bola Tinubu-led administration has announced its plan to unveil an electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System, e-CRVS, and Geospatial Data Repository on Wednesday.
The Chairman of the National Population Commission, NPC, Nasir Kwarra, confirmed the development during a pre-launch briefing in Abuja, stating that the registration system includes all civil registrations such as birth registration birth attestation, adoption, marriage notification, divorce notification, migration and death registration.
This digital system will encompass all civil registrations such as birth registration, stillbirth registration, birth attestation, adoption, marriage notification, divorce notification, migration, and death registration.
This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to strengthening civil registration data capturing, processing, dissemination, and timely access to vital statistics in Nigeria.
The National Population Commission , NPC, developed this system in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund , UNICEF.
It aims to accelerate the improved civil registration and vital statistics systems in Nigeria over ten years, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goal.
The e-CRVS system will provide digital certificates, accessible verification platforms, and a central management system for data analysis, aiding in decision-making processes.
A well-functioning civil registration and vital statistics , CRVS, system registers all births and deaths, issues birth and death certificates, and compiles and disseminates vital statistics, including cause of death information. It may also record marriages and divorces.
Despite the well-documented benefits of CRVS, many countries do not have adequate systems in place. The births of tens of millions of children are known to be unregistered every year, and it is estimated that two-thirds of deaths are never registered and are thus not counted in the vital statistics system.
The introduction of digital technology in civil registration is expected to enhance efficiency and provide a cost-effective way to store data securely. The move toward electronic registration is aimed at achieving more accurate, timely, and accessible vital statistics for the benefit of the nation.
